Surfers from all over the world flock to the town as it boasts some of the best waves in the world. The season for surfing here is from April to September, but the tail end months aren’t too bad either. Although you can surf year-round, there is no guarantee you’ll get to experience Arugam Bay’s world-famous waves. The bay is also the only international surf venue in Sri Lanka, and it was rated as one of the Top 10 Surfing Destinations in the world.
Arugam Bay, being a long bay area has little coves making for excellent surf points: Elephant Rock Point, one of the best breaks for beginners and intermediates; Pottuvil and Whisky Point, these points are 20 min tuk tuk ride north of Arugam Bay, and geared for more experienced surfers; Baby Point and Main Point, are the two main surf spots in Arugam Bay, as their names suggest, the latter is for more experienced surfers, while Baby Point for beginners. If you’re a surfing novice, have no fear—there are plenty of surf schools with qualified instructors who will provide all the necessary equipment and expertise to help you become a pro surfer in no time.
