Sisters of the Pekoe Trail

Adventure, empowerment and sisterhood are at the very core of Sisters of the Pekoe Trail. In hopes of getting a deeper understanding of this unique concept, we had a one on one with the co-founder Irstel Jansen.

The Birth of a Unique Initiative

It all began when Irstel Jansen accompanied her husband Miguel Cunat on multiple hikes exploring the Pekoe Trail. The Trail was the brainchild of Miguel, who spent many years hiking the central highlands of Sri Lanka. Accompanying them was also Charles Conconi who was instrumental in developing the Trail and his wife Orzu Matyakubova. This group’s shared passion for hiking eventually led Irstel and Ozru to a realization that women travel differently and their journey often carries a deeper emotional significance.

And thus, three years ago, against the breathtaking backdrop of Sri Lanka’s tea country, this unique initiative was born.

A Journey of Healing and Renewal

Irstel and Orzu weren’t merely traversing through picturesque landscapes; it was a journey that encompassed deep healing for them. Being able to intentionally disconnect from the daily pressures of work and the world, they found a profound oneness with nature. This novel sense of renewal inspired them to create a similar space for other female hikers. The broader vision here is for women to build connections, find solace and experience the therapeutic power that nature has to offer.

This initiative that sprung forth from a small group of women wanting to build a community was later joined by their friends who shared similar interests. They also had a shared passion for music, yoga, meditation and cooking, which aligned perfectly with the group’s objective. These gatherings soon evolved into a circle of support, fostering camaraderie and nurturing a sense of sisterhood. What began as a weekend retreat grew into a collective effort aimed at encouraging women to explore, heal, and connect.

Exploring the Pekoe Trail as a solo female traveller

The Pekoe Trail consists of 22 stages, winding through the breathtaking landscapes of Sri Lanka’s hill country. Recognizing the challenges women may face while hiking, Irstel and Orzu have thoughtfully mapped out stages and pitstops that are welcoming and accessible, partnering with businesses led by women to create a supportive network along the trail

A Broader Vision for Women’s Growth

The broader vision of the Sisters of the Pekoe Trail is to encourage women to embrace hiking as a means of connection, growth, and adventure. By including female guides and fostering opportunities for women to participate, they aim to make hiking more inclusive and empowering.

Sisters of the Pekoe Trail celebrates Sri Lanka’s stunning natural beauty while inviting women to embark on transformative journeys of self-discovery, one step at a time.
