Sri Lanka is gifted with some of the finest beaches in South Asia, which attract both locals and tourists alike throughout the year. The southern coast of the island is a haven for many beach goers, and what makes it all the more enticing is the fact that these beaches are perfect for a fun family holiday in the tropics. Here are some of the more popular beaches on the southern coast to add to your family’s holiday itinerary.

Kalutara

One of the often overlooked coastal cities, Kalutara is a treasure trove for the family looking to escape the usual tourist hotspot for something more exclusive. Katukurunda Beach and Calido Beach offer vast stretches of deep golden sand which are perfect for family picnics, or even a swim in warm tropical waters. Watch local fishermen as they bring in the day’s catch or enjoy some of the best views of the sun setting on the horizon. You may also be able to find a kite seller along the beach and enjoy some wholesome fun with family.

Hikkaduwa

Just a little further down the southern coastal belt lies the popular town of Hikkaduwa. You will be able to enjoy a number of water sport activities such as surfing orĀ  body boarding here. The Hikkaduwa Coral Sanctuary is a great place to see some of the most diverse marine life in the waters that surround the island. You can either hop in a glass bottom boat or snorkel for a closer look at the beautiful corals and fish. The Hikkaduwa beach is lined with a variety of accommodation options and exciting restaurants that are bound to keep the whole family happy.

Bentota

The resort town of Bentota is one of the most visited beaches in the country as it offers many fun activities. If your family loves adventure, this is definitely the place to be! Choose from a wide range of water sports such as windsurfing, jet skiing, snorkelling and sailing. If you prefer a more laid back approach to your holiday, the wide beaches of Bentota are ideal for the kids to build sand castles, while the adults relax and catch some sun. Bentota also has some interesting cultural spots to visit if you want to make the trip to the city a learning opportunity for the family.

Galle

The city of Galle is most famous for its history, heritage and the delightful Galle Fort. However, you can also have some sun and sea time when you’re here. Within the Galle Fort lies a small stretch of sand that attracts many locals and tourists, due to its calm waters and picturesque views. Bring along a picnic basket for the family to enjoy while you admire views of the legendary Rumassala Hill in the distance.

Tangalle

As you travel further south along the coast, you will come across another pristine stretch of palm-fringed beach in the city of Tangalle. This beach may not have as many water sports activities as its neighbours, but it certainly is a great spot for those who want to enjoy some downtime. Tangalle bay provides a shallow area that’s ideal for leisurely swims with your kids.

Whichever beach you head to, always check if the ocean is safe for swimming, especially when you are travelling with children.
